Nava Dance is a contemporary and holistic dance practice developed by Miriam Peretz.
Nava Dance draws deep inspiration from Persian & Central Asian themes and movement aesthetics, as well as from the devotional practice of whirling. Each Nava Dance class incorporates Miriam’s signature ritualized warm ups, sequences in the Nava style, as well as the study of traditional and contemporary Central Asian dances.
Nava is a beautiful example of a word shared by the Hebrew, Farsi, and Turkish languages. In Farsi and Turkish Nava means sound or tune. It is also the name of one the main Dastgah (musical modes) in the Persian and Turkish music traditions. In the Hebrew language, Nava means pleasant, graceful, beautiful and is a common girls’ name. Also, in Hindi, Nava means young or new. The name Nava was carefully selected to represent the diverse background and cross-cultural themes that the dance style draws upon.
In her workshops, Miriam will offer both technique as well as full-length choreography in the “Nava” style. The choreography will include themes drawn from mystical Persian poetry and the genre of dance often referred to as “Mystical Persian Dance,” or “Neo-Contemporary Classical Persian Dance.”
Persian Classical dance, also often referred to as Persian “Art” dance is inspired by aesthetics found in miniature artwork such as the graceful and highly detailed arabesques and images of angelic women and royalty. Like the miniature artwork, Persian dance is also inspired by movements in nature, such as flowing water, blowing breeze, burning fire, blossoming flowers, and birds flying to freedom.
Miriam’s personalized choreographic style is influenced by her connection to Sufi mystical practice. She often chooses to work with songs whose lyrics are composed by the poetry of Hafez, Omar Khayyam, and Melvana. The movements reflect the common theme of yearning to unite with the beloved, and the intoxication with love for the divine. Embedded into all of Miriam’s classes is a strong focus on musicality, understanding the structure of traditional Persian music, as well as the various rhythm’s.
